Security Video Tips

You can find some great, basic technical tips applicable to you and your employees in these four videos we produced for National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October. The videos, which are about a minute each, are designed to be a high-level overview to get you and your team thinking about important security topics in your personal and work lives.

Flyers and Newsletters

From the Government

The National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST, has gathered an excellent set of security information together in one place, including ready-to-print flyers on phishing, ransomware, business email compromise from the FTC and many more!

From SANS

OUCH! is the world’s leading, free security awareness newsletter designed for everyone. Published every month, each edition is carefully researched and developed by the SANS Security Awareness team, instructors and community members. You can use the OUCH newsletter to distribute to your employees or friends and they have a huge historical, well-researched archive of almost every security topic you can imagine in simple, plain language and illustrations. Print or email yourself, or your users can subscribe from the link above–you’re allowed to send the info around for free as long as you don’t modify it!

Passwords and Email Compromise

Did you know that Microsoft says if you turn on two-factor authentication (Microsoft calls it Multi-Factor Authentication, or MFA, which is the same for our discussion) to protect your email, your email is 99.9% less likely to be hacked? Even if your password stinks! (Doesn’t mean it should!) Microsoft has an article (it’s a little technical, but if you’re the type that enjoys a little fascinating detail you’ll love it!) called Your Pa$$word doesn’t matter that talks about how email accounts are compromised (and they have the research to back it up–the first couple of pages of research has some excellent, basic recommendations before they dive in and get techncial!). Sometimes it’s bad passwords, but a lot of times it’s falling for phishing attacks. MFA helps a lot with both.

Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-Factor or 2-Factor at Home

Lots of online services support Multi-Factor/2-Factor that you can use in your personal or work life, not just Microsoft and Google (more about those below). If you’re curious if the services you use support it, and want a link to directions if they do, check out the Two Factor Auth website and search for or click around to find your services.

You can use an app like Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, or Google Authenticator for generating the codes, but we really like the 1Password Password Manager from AgileBits. It can not only store your passwords securely and generate good ones for you, but it can also store the 2FA/MFA codes for most of the sites above! We get absolutely nothing in exchange for telling you about them, we just really like them (though there are other good password managers out there). Check out our whole video on password managers if you haven’t seen it!

What does Microsoft Multi-Factor/2-Factor Look Like?

If you use Microsoft business accounts, you might be curious what it looks like for you or any other user to actually set up MFA, or Multi-Factor Authentication, to access your email and other Microsoft services (what is it? See the video on another tab, or right here). There are some administrator things (see below) required, but when the users get it set up, it looks like this video (the only missing piece is that users can also choose to get a “push alert” with the Microsoft Authenticator app as well, saving them from typing in the changing code most of the time!).

Set up multi-factor authentication with a mobile device in Microsoft 365 Business

How to enable Multi-Factor Authentication for Administrators

Do you want to enable Multi-Factor Authentication with your Microsoft business accounts for your company? There are actually a variety of factors to consider, but Microsoft has a good overview available. Make sure you understand the consequences before making these changes, as they (like any major security change) can cause major problems if not done correctly. The setup is a little painful, especially if you’re unfamiliar with it, but it’s smooth sailing after you’re set up!

Seriously, there are about a page of instructions, caveats, and links with a lot of detail involved in a larger deployment of MFA across an organization that relies on an existing Microsoft Office 365, or Microsoft 365, system, please be careful. (Hint: we can help!) If you’re setting up a new Microsoft cloud system, turning it on early in the process will make things much easier. Don’t delay! This video from Microsoft provides a good overview if you’re still interested.
